Technical-Terms



This post covers the following Technical Terms and definitions:


  • Blu-ray: It is an optical disk format like CD, DVD. It plays and records High Definition Videos. It can also store large amounts of data. Blu-ray disc can hold up-to 25GB of data.

  • Controller Card: Hardware that acts as an interface between motherboard and others components of computer. It interfaces with peripheral device.


  • DDR3(Double Data Rate Type 3): It is a SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) which is used for system memory. It can transfer data twice as fast than DDR2. It also uses less power than DDR2.

  • Freeware: Software which is available for free. Example: Adobe PDF

  • Firmware: It is a combination of Hardware and Software. Example: Embedded Systems, PROMs etc.

  • Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS): It is  part of cloud computing nomenclature which provides servers, virtual machines, firewalls etc.

  • Localhost: It is the local computer on which we run our program. example can a JSP program running on localhost. Local machine is localhost with loop back address as 127.0.0.1.

  • Markup Languages: Languages which use tags to define elements.Example: HTML uses tags. This gives information about HTML

  • Memory Stick: It was developed by Sony. A type of flash memory used to store data for electronic devices like digital camera.

  • Platform as a Service(PaaS): It is part of cloud computing nomenclature which provides services for application design, application development, testing, web service integration, database integration etc.

  • Shareware: Software which allows users to try software before purchasing it. Example: Adobe Dreamweaver.

  • Software as a service(SaaS): It is part of cloud computing nomenclature in which software and data are hosted centrally as cloud. Example: it is a delivery model for these applications: ERP, MIS, CRM etc

  • NTFS(New Technology File System): Microsoft introduced this file system. It is reliable, repairs hard drive errors, keeps detailed transaction logs. Considered better than previous FAT32 file system.

  • Wi-MAX: It is a wireless communication standard. It's range is greater than Wi-Fi. It can cover several miles using one single station.
